Did you know that Columbus receives an average of 56.11 inches of rainfall a year? Can you imagine what that rainfall will do to your home if your downspouts are damaged? You can save thousands of dollars in foundation repairs by preventing excess water from pooling near your home, damaging your foundation, and seeping into your basement.
Here are some things to consider when examining your downspouts:
- Notice where your downspout is dumping water. Is the water flowing away from your home, or is it pooling close to your home? If the water is pooling near your home, this could damage your foundation and cause your basement to flood.
- Ideally, your downspouts should be dumping water at least 5 feet away from your home. If not, use gutter extensions (available at any hardware store) to redirect the water away from your home.
- Keep an eye on your downspouts to make sure that they aren’t clogged. A great time to clean your gutters and downspouts is in the spring and fall.
